Beauparc Discuss Future of Recycling with Environment Minister

Major changes to the way that recycling is managed in the UK were discussed when Environment Minister Rebecca Pow took a virtual tour of the latest technology to recycle plastic waste, due to be brought on stream early next year by Beauparc.

With the new Environment Bill just past its committee stage Rebecca Pow, who is the DEFRA Minister with special responsibility for waste, was keen to hear about innovations that may be introduced to support the UK’s circular economy and issues facing those who work in the industry.

She told the online meeting: “This is the biggest piece of legislation to go through parliament in two decades. We are looking for new thinking about recycling, repair and making things last longer.”

Beauparc, which has its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland has 2,300 employees in the UK and has invested in 19 facilities across the country.

The Minister was shown the technology behind a new £30 million material recycling facility in Barkston, near Grantham which becomes fully operational in April 2021 and a newly equipped facility in Leicestershire which will be processing waste in February 2021.

During the meeting discussions were held on a wide range of issues. These included how PRN (Packaging Recovery Note) values impact the industry, how greater co-ordination can be achieved between packaging producers, retailers and waste management businesses and what new innovations are being developed to achieve environmentally sustainable practices.

Beauparc Chief Executive Officer, Brian McCabe said: “It is important that we work together with Government to achieve its waste recycling targets. We need to understand the pressures that our politicians are under and they need to hear from the industry about what is practical and achievable.

“With the current Covid restrictions we had to limit this briefing to online, but we hope to show the Minister around some of our facilities next year and we are looking forward to playing a part in the consultations over major changes for the industry that the Environment Bill will bring.

“We have ambitious plans to further expand in the UK and bring about the environmental changes that are needed.”
